UNDP’s 50th anniversary: Exploring new opportunities to accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals intends to show how UNDP’s 50 years of experience at the forefront of development have been a factor in the growth of Kazakhstan and how UNDP can contribute to realization of the Sustainable Development Goals in Kazakhstan.
Over the past twenty-three years of cooperation UNDP has assisted Kazakhstan in preparing key national and regional policy documents, legislative drafting, institutionalization and capacity building of effective governance, promoting gender and social equality, as well as energy efficiency and environment protection.
In the last fifteen years, Kazakhstan achieved considerable progress in implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which makes the country well positioned to champion in achieving the SDGs, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at an historic UN Summit.
Over the next fifteen years, with these new Goals that universally apply to all, countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.
Kazakhstan announced its strong commitment towards achieving the SDGs, and the depth of its aspiration for development can be seen from its national strategies and sectoral programs, such as “Kazakhstan 2050”, “Nurly Zhol” and “The 100 concrete steps”.
The UN Country Team in Kazakhstan has started a dialogue with the Government on SDGs, their relevance to Kazakhstan and an implementation approach suitable for Kazakhstan. The Government has recognized the need for Kazakhstan to develop and adopt a systematic approach that would encompass the key dimensions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UNDP will work closely with the Government to facilitate the implementation of the SDGs, by providing with the needed expertise, best practices, and innovations.
The session’s guest speakers will talk about a wide range of issues, including achievements of Kazakhstan, the lessons learnt, as well as the expectations for the future cooperation between Kazakhstan and UNDP.
