About the upcoming Astana Economic Forum 2016

A. Irgaliyev speaks at Central Communications Service briefing

The Central Communications Service under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan held a briefing in Astana today, April 14. Chairman of the Board of JSC “Economic Research Institute” Aset Irgaliyev spoke about the upcoming Astana Economic Forum 2016.

The Forum will be held on May 25-26 in the capital of Kazakhstan. The AEF 2016, which will be focused on the “New Economic Reality: Diversification, Innovation and Knowledge Economy”, will cover main trends and challenges of global economic development, as well as issues of long-term economic growth in the context of new economic reality.

 According to A. Irgaliyev, the Forum`s content promises to be interesting. “This year, the Forum will be attended by the world renowned representatives of expert community, politicians, governors of major financial institutions, heads of international organizations, and Nobel Prize laureates, including Jack Yun Ma, founder of Chinese e-commerce company AliBaba Group; Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the IMF; Suma Chakrabarti, President of the EBRD; Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University who was ranked by The Economist as among the world`s three most influential economists; Daron Acemoglu, Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, author of bestseller “Why Nations Fail”; Arthur Laffer, former economic adviser to US President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; Ha-Joon Chang, winner of the Leontief Prize; Song Hongbing, author of the bestseller “Currency Wars”; and Nobel laureates in Economics Edward Prescott, Christopher Pissarides, and Thomas Sargent.

As Aset Irgaliyev noted, the Forum`s program includes around 20 events. This year, the Plenary Session will be held at the Central Concert Hall “Kazakhstan” for the first time. The key events of the Forum are Kazakhstan Investment Summit, jointly organized with The Economist; the Great Silk Road Countries` Forum, jointly organized with the Secretariat of Boao Forum for Asia; and Kazakhstan Privatization Forum, jointly organized with The Financial Times.

The Regional Forum of the IMF that involves the participation of the IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde and governments of the Central Asia, Caucasus and EEC countries, will be held on May 24.

Furthermore, the Astana Economic Forum provides the lectures on Economics by the key speakers, a series of workshops on the use of blockchain technology, networking, master classes led by the leading international experts and businessmen, and a series of events held for students of Kazakhstan universities. The Forum is organized in partnership with such international organizations and financial institutions as OECD, UN, World Bank, ADB, and EBRD.
